Survival Strategies for Career Coaches
Career coaches work with a number of individuals regarding important topics related to their career, such as finding the right career path, advancing in a career, and similar topics. However, more and more career coaches are in the position in which they must teach survival strategies to many of their clients. Many clients are facing the possibility of losing their jobs through the means of being laid off for one reason or another or outright termination. If you are a career coach, it is important to guide these individuals in these particular types of situations.
The first thing that you should teach your client
As a career coach, the first thing that you should teach your client is how to create a reputation in the company that they work for which is hard to replace. This is normally called being "indispensable in the workplace". It is a common fact that most employees can actually be replaced. There is usually someone that can fill the position that has more experience, and/or more education. However, there are many methods that an employee can use to ensure that they are highly valued by their employee.
One of the main ways that a career coach can assist an individual in becoming valuable within a company is to help that person learn how to take total responsibility for their actions. When an individual is able to accept responsibility for their actions, even if they are incorrect, it allows that individual room for growth. This can be considered an admirable trait to many different types of companies. The individual who can take responsibility for their action, and grow as a result of mistakes is an employee who is truly hard to replace.
The second thing that you can teach
The second way that you can teach a client how to survive the many complications that occur within the workplace is to teach them the value of taking complete ownership of all the tasks and responsibilities that are part of their job. These individuals should be open to change, and willing to evaluate all situations in the workplace from a variety of angles. The person who is able to take a look at the situation from an aerial view, so to speak, is the employee that is often deemed as the irreplaceable employee.
For career coaches, it is important to maintain a positive attitude at all times. It is equally important to teach your clients that are facing complicated situations at work to do the same. Many times, it can be very difficult to remain positive in the workplace, especially if an individual faces the possibility of being laid off or terminated, but doing so can make a world of difference to the employer. You should help your client learn how to remain optimistic and find something good in everything. Having a good mental attitude can make a big difference in the workplace.
Many individuals fail to succeed in the workplace due to the fact that they are not team players. It is important to teach your client to show loyalty to the organization in which they are employed, the management team, and the others that they work with. While it is important for your client to allow their strengths to be displayed in the workplace, it is imperative that they do not do so in such a way that it undermines the strengths of another individual that they work with.
